GEORGE WINSTON solo piano concert

ICCF was delighted to host George Winston, a Grammy award winning pianist, at the 2007 spring benefit . His appearance followed a 6:00pm dinner at Frederick Meijer Gardens and Scuplture Park on Wednesday, April 18. Winston performed songs from his latest recording, Gulf Coast Blues and Impressions - A Hurricane Relief Benefit, as well as selections from his seasonal favorites. In addition to his piano pieces, he also played two selections on the guitar and one on the harmonica. Audience favorites included Pachelbel Canon and Riders on the Storm.

George Winston was born in 1949 and grew up mainly in Montana, but he also spent his later formative years in Mississippi and Florida. Winston cites the pianists of New Orleans as the biggest influences on his own piano playing. "I play three styles: New Orleans R&B piano, stride piano, and folk piano - the style that is inspired by instrumental R&B and rock, North American folk music, and even more by the sounds of the piano itself." In 1972 Winston recored his first solo piano album Ballads and Blues 1972. Since 1980 he has released ten more solo piano albums. He has also recorded soundtracks for five children's stories. In 1983 Winston founded Dancing Cat Records. His tour schedule includes more than 110 concerts a year: solo piano concerts, solo guitar concerts, solo harmonica concerts, and solo piano dances. Winston is driven by a deep rooted realization that his craft is still evolving. Constantly traveling, he draws inspiration from the places and people he encounters.
